COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CLOTH, COATED, VINYL RESIN, EXPANDED LAYER, FOR UPHOLSTERY
(ARTIFICIAL LEATHER)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description for all Federal agencies.
1. SCOPE.
1.1 Scope. This commercial item description covers fire, mildew, and oil resistant coated cloth composed of a knitted base cloth coated with a secondary expanded vinyl foam layer and an outer vinyl wear layer, primarily intended for upholstery material.
2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS.
2.1 Standard commercial product. The vinyl coated shall be the manufacturer’s standard commercial product except for any changes necessary to conform to this commercial item description.
2.2 Coated cloth. The base cloth shall consist of a textile knit material of suitable construction (jersey, loop knit, (twill), etc.), fiber composition (cotton, polyester, blend, etc.), and weight to meet the performance requirements listed in Table I. When specified in the contract or order, the base cloth shall be a loop knit (terry) polyester cloth weighing not less than 3.2 oz/sq yd (108 g/sq m) in a greige state. The coating compound (wear layer and expanded layer) shall be formulated from vinyl-chloride polymer or copolymer, plasticized and pigmented to meet the color specified (see 6.3).
The finished coated cloth shall be 53.5 inches (135.9 cm) wide, minimum; 0.045 inch (1.143 mm) thick, minimum; and shall weigh 20.3 oz/sq yd (678 g/sq m), minimum. Color and finish shall approximate standard samples available from the office issuing the purchase order or solicitation for offers. The coated cloth shall be furnished in 25 yard (22.9 m) minimum length rolls, with no more than two pieces per roll and a minimum piece length of 3 yards (2.7 m). Put-up shall be on full width rolls.
The finished coated cloth shall meet the performance requirements in Table I.
