1/ The calibration of the fadeometer and the definition of the American Association of Textile
Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) Fading Units shall be in accordance with Test Method
AATCC 16. Using the formula below, 16.5 to 23.5 AFU's are acceptable as 20 SFH's.

2/ The specimens must be dried after each of the 3 laundering cycles.
3/ Only the stain on the cotton and polyester fibers of the color transfer cloth shall be
evaluated.
4/ Cotton laundering procedure shall be followed.
5/ The needle size shall be 0.036 (+ 0.001) inch (0.91 + 0.025 mm) across the blade eye. The
thread shall be polyester covered conforming to A-A-50199, Ticket No. 50, 3 ply for the
needle and Ticket No. 70, 2 ply for the looper. As an alternate, a cotton thread conforming to
Type I of A-A-52094 may be used with Ticket No. 60, 3 ply for the needle and Ticket No. 70,
3 ply for the looper. The use of polyester covered polyester-core thread is not allowed.
3.7 Labels. A commercial-type label is acceptable, provided that an additional printed cloth
label containing the contractor's name, contract number, size and National Stock Number
(NSN) is caught on the stitching of the commercial label. The commercial label shall include
fiber and laundering information.
3.8 Label/tag. Each item shall be individually bar-coded with a paper tag for personal
clothing items. The paper tag shall be standard bleached sulfate having a basis weight of 100
pounds. The paper used for the tags shall have a smooth finish to accept thermal transfer and
direct printing. The tags shall have a hole and shall be attached to each item by a fastener,
clearly legible and readable by a scanner. The bar coding element shall be a 13 digit national
stock number (NSN). The bar code type shall be a medium to high code density and shall be
located so that it is completely visible on the item when it is folded and/or packaged as
specified and so that it causes no damage to the item.
3.9 Toxic chemicals, hazardous substances and ozone depleting chemicals (ODCs). The use
of toxic chemicals, hazardous substances, or ODCs shall be avoided, whenever feasible. The
